Podcasting Crash Course: From 0 To Launch In 60 Minutes

You may have heard of podcasting, but want to learn more. Or even if you’re familiar with it, you may not have a great idea to launch a podcast. This crash course will help you get from your first podcast idea to recording your first episode!

Your Podcast Niche

The first thing you need is a niche idea for what your podcast will be about so you can stand out from the crowd. There are more than 4.4 million podcasts (PodNews, 2022.) in the world today. If you want to create a business podcast that uses only baseball references to give advice, go for it. A podcast serving self-help tips from the point of view of a 50’s housewife, why not?! Let your creativity shine and don’t be afraid to break the mold by taking a conventional topic and adding a niche spin.

Go for a Cover that Pops

We all judge books, and podcasts, by the cover. Your cover art is the first thing people are going to see. Whether you have the Photoshop skills to create one from scratch, or you use a tool like Canva to tweak a template, find something that represents your brand.

Keep in mind, your cover art won’t change for the most part. You may add an episode number or title, but the bulk of the design should be consistent. Go for eye catching. This is what potential listeners are going to see as they browse Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or the many other podcast serving platforms. Don’t miss the opportunity to pull them in with great imagery.

Pick the Perfect Host

Hosting is not just for websites. You need a podcast hosting service. This is the place where you will upload your audio files, cover art, transcripts, and then push your podcast out to the world. Be sure to pick a host that offers you value for what you are paying, lets you maximize your monthly allotment of hours (especially if you are planning to have multiple podcasts), and is constantly releasing new features. We offer PodOps Hosting designed specifically for podcasters. From day 1 to 1,000, we want to help you grow.

Don't Ignore Meta Data

Meta data is a fancy way of referring to the information behind the scenes that tells search engines and podcast directories what your show and episodes are about and how to categorize them.

When you set up your podcast hosting account be sure to define the language, keywords, description, and category for your podcast. All of these contribute to how you will appear in podcast directory search results.

Set a Schedule. Press Record!

Define a schedule of when you will record on a daily or weekly basis, along with how much time you are giving yourself to edit. Think ‘Rule of 4’ here. It usually takes four times the length of an episode to complete the editing.

With this in place, determine how often you will release episodes, and how many you want in your first season. Once you have those items in place, you can sit down to start recording. Happy podcasting!
