If you are new to podcasting and audio, you are probably wondering what XLR is? Do I need to invest, or can I get by with a USB microphone?
They both have their benefits and drawbacks. If you are looking to start a podcast, you can get by with a USB mic. USB Mics are easy to use, give you good sound quality, and are more mobile to take on the road. While the XLR is an upgrade from the USB, it helps you get a professional-quality product and gives you additional editing options.
USB Microphone
PROS
- Ease of use at home and on the road
- Plugs right into your computer/laptop
- The cost is lower for a USB mic
CONS
- Not as flexible with sound quality and customization
- If there is an issue with the mic, you have to replace the whole thing
XLR Microphone
PROS
- XLR mics have more flexibility for customizing your audio because they typically have to be routed through an interface
- They are built to last, making them an excellent investment for long-term podcasters
- The XLR mic allows for the individual components to be replaced without issues
CONS
- These are a more significant investment since the XLR will require an interface. It may also need a phantom power source
- It’s more challenging to travel with this setup due to having more equipment to take with you
If you are looking to get into podcasting professionally, you probably have the use for both. If podcasting is a hobby, a good USB mic will serve your purpose just fine.
